Adobe Connect advice on getting set up for students

WHAT IS ADOBE CONNECT?

Adobe Connect is an online tool that allows groups to “meet” together. While many students are learning from home, Adobe Connect creates opportunities for students and teachers to participate in online learning and discussion together “in real time”.

Adobe Connect creates “meeting rooms”, led by a teacher. The teacher will host the meeting and be able to share their screen, microphone and webcam to teach a lesson.

WHY ARE WE USING ADOBE CONNECT?

Adobe Connect is endorsed by the Department of Education. All students have access to Adobe Connect through their Department of Education user name and password. Our log in screen looks like this:

WHAT ABOUT WEBCAMS AND MICROPHONES?

Our school has chosen Adobe Connect as it allows students to see and hear their teacher through the teacher’s webcam. This can be very useful for class discussions and receiving feedback. Students will NOT be required to use their webcam on Adobe Connect lessons however the teacher may enable student microphones so they can join in class discussions. If a particular assessment task requires students to make or share a video, this will be explained in the assessment task requirements.

A student can control their microphone (either turn it or or mute it using the microphone icon on their screen)

WILL ALL MY CLASSES USE ADOBE CONNECT?

No. All lessons will be published on Google Classroom. On Google Classroom teachers explain lesson activities, share resources and provide links to suitable learning tools. If a teacher plans to deliver a lesson on Adobe Connect they will paste a link to the meeting room on Google Classroom. The “live” meeting will take place during your normal timetabled lesson with that teacher.

HOW WILL MY TEACHER KNOW I AM TAKING PART IN THE LESSON?

When a student logs in to an Adobe Connect Meeting their attendance is recorded. The teacher will see the name of all students participating in the lesson.

WHAT ARE THE FEATURES OF ADOBE CONNECT?

Webcam

The teacher can show their webcam to explain concepts, lead discussion and provide feedback

Microphone

The teacher can share their microphone and allow students to also enable their microphones for group discussions or asking questions

Chat

Each classroom has a chat feature where students can ask or respond to questions. Teachers can also message students individually to provide assistance or answer individual questions.

Screen Sharing

The teacher can share their screen with students. This means they could be showing a resource, such as a slide show, and explaining features or concepts to students at the same time. Students can also share their screen with the teacher. If a student is having difficulty with an online task, they can share their screen and the teacher can provide assistance.

Whiteboard

The whiteboard feature allows the teacher to draw diagrams the same as they might in a physical classroom. Students can also be given access to draw on the whiteboard.

Raise your hand

When a student turns on the “Raise my hand” icon, the teacher will know they need assistance
