Online Learning - Faculty Summaries

English

The English Faculty is committed to providing relevant, differentiated and quality online learning to students who are learning from home. Each member of the faculty is using Google Classroom to upload relevant resources and activities for each class. We are corresponding with the students during our scheduled class times, requesting they advise us if they are participating in the online learning and providing them with assistance and feedback on their tasks. 

 

Mathematics

Students will be participating in lessons online and will continue to develop their foundational skills while they achieve content outcomes. The teaching and learning will be designed for students to learn explicit skills in conjunction with developing higher order and critical thinking.

Students will be participating in a variety of lesson deliveries that will have the purpose of targeting learning needs.

Explicit lesson content communicated through teaching documents/videos

Practical activities through the use of demonstration videos and the use of applications such as desmos graphing calculator, geogebra and excel that meet the target of developing skills while exploring mathematical properties related to particular content areas.

The use of online mathematics programs as a learning and assessment tool.

All students have access to the 2020 Mathsonline program that contains interactive lessons and activities across content areas for all courses. It will also be used for diagnostic testing of skills, where work is marked immediately and all progress can be tracked by both the teacher and student. The online quizzes also allow students to move through different levels of challenge with their work once they have achieved particular targets and skills with their work.

The online google classroom forum allows students to post questions and seek teacher feedback and submit set tasks that are due for marking.

 

PDHPE

Personal Development, Health and Physical Education focuses on encouraging students to think critically, solve problems and make informed decisions related to health, safety, wellbeing and physical activity. The lessons being delivered through our Google Classroom are focusing on explicit learning, purposeful and relevant learning experiences, self-paced activities and the opportunity for students to share and articulate ideas within an online learning environment. The learning activities may include: online educational visuals, lesson topic summaries, extended response questions, analysing info-graphs, quizzes and questionnaires, literacy and numeracy based content and the opportunity for online teacher feedback. Within this new learning environment we are also developing the student’s ability to promote self-motivation, persistence, independence and interdependence. The transition from our normal day to day learning environment to online has been a positive and rewarding educational experience

 

Science

Science staff have extensive experience at delivering, managing and monitoring online learning. Our team has been using Stile online learning for Years 7-10 and Edrolo online learning for Years 11-12 for over two years now. These online learning platforms will continue to be our main online learning platform, however other work will also be posted for students to engage with. All communication with students regarding work expectations will be made through Google Classroom. We look forward to continuing to provide quality Science education to the students of Asquith Girls High School

 

HSIE

Years 7 - 10

HSIE teachers are continuing to teach the core subjects and elective courses in an online format using Google Classroom with a range of online resources. Teachers have been developing rich online resources that are differentiated and focus on literacy and numeracy and provide students with opportunities to develop critical thinking skills. Teachers can monitor individual student work by issuing activities using the assignment method so that teachers can look at individual responses. Teachers are also using collaborative methods by requesting student participation in collaborative documents and through online discussion where students provide answers to questions on Google Classroom. Teachers are also planning on utilising the Adobe Connect platform where teachers can set up meetings with classes and provide direct instruction and have collaborative meetings with their classes. Teachers will respond to any student questions and provide support and feedback via Google Classroom and will continue to monitor student wellbeing and communicate with parents as needed.

Years 11 and 12

HSIE teachers are continuing to teach Stage 6 courses in an online format using Google Classroom with a range of online resources. Teachers have been developing rich online resources that are differentiated, focus on literacy and numeracy and provide students with opportunities to develop critical thinking skills relevant to their courses in preparation for the rigour required in each HSC course. Teachers can monitor individual student work by issuing activities using the assignment method so that teachers can look at individual responses on worksheets. Teachers are also using collaborative methods by requesting student participation in collaborative documents and through online discussion where students provide answers to questions on the Google Classroom, which is an integral aspect of all HSC HSIE courses. Teachers are also ready to implement the Adobe Connect platform with senior classes where teachers can set up meetings with classes and provide direct instruction and have collaborative meetings with their classes. Teachers will respond to any student questions and provide support and feedback via the Google Classroom and will continue to monitor student wellbeing and communicate with parents as needed. All HSIE teachers are committed to support Stage 6 students through assessment and continue to offer written feedback on assessment tasks to ensure that students feel confident in their studies and with the development of relevant skills for each individual course.

 

LOTE

We are well served in Languages Other Than English with some very rich and engaging online platforms that we use on regular basis that students are very familiar with and are highly suited to language learning. Furthermore, they offer a differentiated and flexible learning tool which is engaging and a valuable asset in this challenging time.

In addition to these online platforms students have access to hard and soft copies of their topics, as well as a variety of resources via our Google Classroom page.

 

Visual Arts

Year 7-12 Visual Arts class work and resource materials (including video links and practical demonstrations) are being posted on Google Classroom for students to access. Students are welcome to post/email questions to receive feedback and advice on their progress and completion of tasks. Submission of senior practical and written assessment tasks is being adjusted to allow for students to submit work digitally from home. Senior students can collect artworks and art materials this week to work on at home on their practical tasks.

Photography

Year 10 and 11 class work and resource materials are being posted on Google Classroom for students to access. Students are welcome to post/email questions and work to receive feedback and advice on their progress and completion of their tasks. Submission of practical and written assessment tasks is being adjusted to allow for students to submit work digitally from home.

Music

Students in Music Year’s 7-12 have their own Google Classroom set up for each class. Through this platform, teachers are able to provide students with links and activities for listening and theory-based components of the course. Students are also still able to engage with practical components of Music via uploading videos of rehearsal time and performances where the teacher is then able to provide meaningful feedback. This is particularly relevant for students years 9-12, who are encouraged to continue practising on their individual instrument at home and work on their performance skills.

Dance

Dance Students from Year 7 through to Year 12 have their own Google Classroom set up and teachers have checked that all students enrolled in the courses have joined the online platforms. Although Dance is a practical subject, we are finding new and innovative ways to engage students in movement phrases and sequences. Students upload their movement videos and the teacher will provide feedback to each student to develop their skills and understanding of dance technique and performance quality. Year 12 have an HSC Composition Google Classroom to be able to communicate with their dancers and upload video progress for the candidates, dancers and teacher to view

 

Drama

Drama students from Years 7 to 12 have their own Google Classroom and teachers have ensured all students are enrolled and active. Although Drama is a mix of practical and theoretical learning, there are many innovative ways to engage learners in the theatrical process. Students can participate in a range of online learning activities. Students are uploading performance tasks like monologues and group tasks have been amended where required. The Google Classroom platform allows continued teacher-student communication and feedback. 

 

TAS

The TAS faculty is supporting online learning through the following ways:

• Uploading resources, lessons and extension activities on Google Classroom

• Being available in our normal timetabled lessons on the Google Classroom to answer questions

• Creating and uploading video explanations of class work to provide verbal instructions to students

• Removal of practical components to ensure equity for all TAS students

At this stage, practical components of major projects have been put on hold and replaced with our theory lessons and portfolio work. We are waiting to hear NESA's advice about major projects which should be released next week.

 

School Counsellors

The counselling staff at Asquith Girls HS will continue to support students, whether they are learning at school or at home. We will continue to support all students and their families as we have in the past, on a daily basis, by being available to talk to the school community on matters that impact on the wellbeing and safety of all students. Please ring the school if you wish the counselling staff to respond to your concerns and we will return your call. There are also a number of organisations that provide wellbeing support for students, which has been shared in a separate document.

 

Careers Support

Mr Williamson will be providing Careers support through continuation of career-based learning activities for Year 10 Careers lessons on Google Classroom. General career information will continue to be distributed via email and newsletters. Should individual support and assistance be required, parents/caregivers and students can email Mr Williamson.

 

 

Learning Support

The Learning Support Team will continue to assist students who need additional assistance with their learning. Ms Ridley and Ms Kontos will be linked to every Google Classroom page for the students that they are normally supporting in class and in literacy and numeracy support groups. They have also set up a Google Form that students can complete if they are having difficulty with their learning and would like some additional learning support.
