The Secret Ingredient Session 7

The Secret Ingredient Session 7 took place on Thursday 1st November. Our masterclass of the night was focusing on how to make meals that are quick, easy but also nutritious and tasty. We all have super busy nights and the last thing we want to do is get in the habit of getting greasy takeaway each week. Some handy tips for quick, nutritious meals include:

  • Keeping your pantry stocked with staple items such as brown rice, pasta, lentils, chickpeas, crushed tomatoes, taco shells etc- this way you know you can whip up something easily without going to the shops (hint: lentils replace meat so well and tinned lentils only need to be heated through)

  • Stock your freezer with pre-made nutritious meals for the family to heat; curry, bolognese, lasagne, meatballs, koftas, cauliflower rice... the list is endless

  • Invest in “YouFoodz”, “Lite’n’Easy” or others…pre-made individual meals for nights when not everyone is home but those that are don’t miss out

  • Keep a collection of your “quick” meals and try encouraging the kids to have a go as well

  • “Hour of Power”; allocate an hour or more per week to meal prep some upcoming meals. These could be dinners, lunches, breakfast or snacks. It could include make the dish completely or it could mean marinating chicken, pre-cutting veggies for the following night. Whatever it is to make your busy nights easier. The hour is worth it!

The recipe we cooked up at The Secret Ingredient was Coconut Salmon with a Beetroot and Walnut Salad. It is so yummy and so so quick! The salad ingredients can be replaced with any ingredients your family likes or vegetables instead. The salmon only takes 10 minutes to cook through in a very hot oven.

Our next Secret Ingredient sessions will be:

  • Thursday 22nd November – Chicken Wings and Crunchy Slaw $10 per person

  • Thursday 13th December – BYO dish to share! No cost
